Latitude for Rhapsody

47” x 47″ oil and acrylic on canvas

Latitude for Rhapsody is one of the recent full moon paintings. The backgrounds are usually painted over a previous painting under the influence of the full moon. If you are not affected by the full moon, the best explanation that I can give is that creativity flows, usually in a positive way.

The backgrounds are painted flat, colour is added and then, while still very wet , water is sprayed onto the surface to cover the surface. Then spray paint is added, then more water is sprayed and the table is tilted to disperse the spray pigment and drain away the water and some of the floating pigments. When I am satisfied, the table is reverted to flat and left to dry. Then I add the spirit cloud, the horizontal portal line, and the energy spots of colour. The spots are very precisely located, due to the underlaying "history, read previous painting" and the dispersal of the colour and pigment. These spots are positioned to keep your eye roving across the surface of the work. Then the torsos are positioned and painted.

Then the X's, the Y and the Z are applied to keep your eye roving and as a reminder of Cartesian markings that we are part of a 3D world. The second X is doing double duty as female chromosomes.

Lastly and subtly are the three black splashes/spots in a triangle to keep the eye roving.

And you thought painting was not complex?
