No Mere Cleverness Here, was created in 2016, acrylic on canvas, size 60″ x 68″. It is both simple and complex, just what I look for in a work of art. The dots can be interpreted in several ways, as polka dots , moons, especially the orange/pink one and as placeholders in a composition, where they sit in a very specific location. The graphite wash can allude to an idealized lake in an idealized landscape, if that is what you see. The somewhat drafted line delineates the horizon and references rules, which it is literally, also the rules and regulations that we live by. And it has balance and playfulness. It is alive “now” and rewards the viewer with the patience to view it several different ways. Does the title make sense now?
